Born From Frustration

In 2011, master craftsman Thomas Whitfield walked out of his factory job. After twenty years of watching furniture standards decline, he decided enough was enough.

His grandfather had built wardrobes that still stand today. His father crafted dining tables that became family heirlooms. Thomas watched his own employer replace solid wood with chipboard, skilled joinery with staple guns, and proper finishes with plastic veneers.

He started Lone Rough Furniture in a converted barn with two apprentices and a simple promise: build furniture the way it should be built. That promise has not changed in over a decade.

Craftsman working on furniture

The Workshop

Our workshop sits on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. Eight craftsmen work here, each with at least a decade of experience. We take two apprentices every year to pass on what we know.

No production lines. No computerised cutting. Every joint is marked by hand, cut by hand, and fitted by hand. It takes longer. It costs more. But the results speak for themselves.

Our Materials

We source timber from managed British woodlands. Oak from the Midlands. Ash from Wales. Walnut from estates that have supplied woodworkers for generations.

Each board is selected by eye, seasoned in our yard, and only used when the moisture content is exactly right. Rush the wood and it will warp. We never rush.

What We Believe

Quality Over Speed

Every piece takes as long as it needs. We will not cut corners to meet arbitrary deadlines. Your furniture deserves better than that.

Honest Pricing

We quote what it costs. No surprise fees. No hidden charges. The price we give is the price you pay.

Environmental Responsibility

Sustainable timber. Natural finishes. Furniture built to last decades means less waste for landfills. Good craftsmanship is green craftsmanship.

Personal Service

You will deal with the people who make your furniture. Questions answered by craftsmen, not call centres. It is old fashioned, and it works.
